The Sanford Lake Improvement Board was established under Part 309 (Inland Lake Improvements) of Michigan’s Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act. In accordance with the act, the Sanford Lake Improvement Board includes a lakefront property owner, a representative from the Village of Sanford, a representative from Jerome Township, the Midland County Drain Commissioner and a Midland County Commissioner. Edenville Township is not part of the lake board and administers a separate plant control program on the north end of the lake.

In 2018, the Sanford Lake Improvement Board held a public hearing on a five-year lake improvement program. A primary focus of the program is the control of nuisance aquatic plant growth in Sanford Lake. Plant control activities are coordinated under the direction of the lake board’s environmental consultant, Progressive AE.
